Shimizu Bizan I (Shimizu Tokutaro, 1861-1931)

As yet there is little biographical information available on Shimizu Bizan I. He was one of the great Kutani ceramicists of the Meiji and Taisho eras and his work is a refined and elegant version of the colourful Kutani ceramic tradition. Indeed, it is the quality of his work that makes it stand apart. His use of colour is rich but never garish, and frequent use is made of gold to enrich the surfaces of his work. His patterns are traditional and yet handled originally. The painting is precise and refined and the works are finely potted and discretely marked. They are rare and true objet de luxe.
